Holes by Louis Sachar

Summary:
In the book, Holes, Louis Sachar describes the punishment for an innocent kid: Stanley Yelnats. The story begins in a little apartment where Mr. Yelnats is trying to invent a way to recycle old shoes. That project led to Stanley's arrest. Stanley was accused of stealing a $1000 shoe from a homeless shelter. He was sentenced either to prison or to Camp Green Lake. By his parents, he was forced to Camp Green Lake. Camp Green Lake just used to be a lake. But now, the lake has dried and it became a hot, flat wasteland. There are dangerous creatures there too. The are scorpians, rattlesnakes, and even the yellow spotted lizard. Once someone is bitten by the yellow spotted lizard, they would die within an hour.

Stanley arrived at Camp Green Lake by bus. The first adult he met there was Mr. Sir. He introduced Stanley to the place. Everyone at Camp Green Lake had a nickname. There are no fences surrounding the camp. However, no one would escape. Anyone would die walking for days in the 100 degrees heat. More people would rather just get hurt and get sent to the hospital. For example, just before Stanley came, a kid named Barf Bag stepped on a rattlesnake on purpose to get out of the place. Stanley is replacing his spot in the camp.

Everyday in the camp, the children had to dig a hole that their shovel can fit in in any direction. That's why X-Ray always picks the shortest shovel. The regular shovel is about 5 feet, X-Ray's shovel is about a quarter inch smaller. The kids had to wake up just when the sun is rising and dig till they finished one hole. If any kid finds something while digging they are to report it to the warden and had a chance to get the rest of the day off. Everyday, each kid is presented with one canteen of water. That would be all that they get in a whole day. Digging holes would be really tiring. All the kids wanted to finish before the hottest time of the day, noon.

The first hole that Stanley dug took him to the afternoon. His hands got covered with blisters. Everyone says the digging just gets harder and harder. Your hands hurts even more as they days go by. Stanley was named Caveman by X-Ray. Zero always dug his hole the fastest. However, he doesn't know how to read or write. One day, Zero made a deal with Stanley. If Stanley would teach Zero, he would dig part of Stanley's hole everyday. Through this deal, they became quick friends.

Surprisingly, Stanley found what looked like a gold bullet. When X-Ray noticed he took it for a day off. When the warden asked X-Ray where he found it, he pointed to a random spot. The warden quickly grew nice, gave everyone lots of water, and ordered the kids to dig lots of holes near where X-Ray claimed to have found the Golden Bullet. When the warden got impatient after a few weeks, she returned to her normal, mean self, giving a little bit of water to the kids for the whole day.

One day, Zero escaped. So, Stanley went chasing after Zero. On his journey, he came across a mountain in the shape of a "hands up" sign and a boat. He soon came in a cave and found Zero. After talking some sense into Zero, Stanley had two choices: risk walking back with no food and water, or risk walking forward in hopes of finding water and food. Stanley chose to walk forward. Fortunately, he found a small lake and onions. With food and water they were able to head back.

They decided to go back and arrive at night so they can dig where the Golden Bullet was really found and see if they find anything. When they arrived, they took a little nap and then started digging. They soon found a briefcase, but the warden also arrived along with Mr. Sir. They saw yellow spotted lizards crawling around and on Zero and Stanley. Zero and Stanley then freezed. It took till morning when the lizards finally crawled off and went back to their home. No one was bitten. Just then, Stanley's lawyer came to get Stanley out of this camp by proving him innocent. Stanley was astonished he had a lawyer because his family would be too poor to afford a lawyer. The warden said the briefcase was hers, but by then, Zero had already spent the whole night writing Stanley Yelnats on the briefcase. Dissapointed, the warden stood, shocked, to have the briefcase taken away after years of waiting.

It turned out that Mr. Yelnats had invented a way to eliminate foot odor and this lawyer was using the product. As a thanks, the lawyer came to help Stanley out. With no records of Zero and how he first ever came to this camp, Stanley was able to take Zero with him. Zero has no parents, so he was glad to be with a family again.
